The Balenciaga Triple S and the ugly sneaker trend are impossible to avoid these days, and in my opinion, the Triple S is the king of the ugly. And I mean that in a good way. As a child of the 90s, they give me a nice nostalgic feeling and a serious flashback to when I used to live in my Buffalo shoes. This is a trend we love to hate or hate that we love.
The ugly sneaker trend
OK, so I have to admit that when I first saw this trend popping up I thought it was some kind of a joke. What the heck? I’m used to seeing street-style stars wearing “interesting” things, but this? With its chunky silhouette and uncool vibe, this was definitely not for me.
Mr Porter wrote that the ugly sneaker is the next evolutionary wave following on from the normcore trend. Think the so-uncool-they’re-cool trainers that Mr. Larry David wears in Curb Your Enthusiasm. I have to admit I totally agree with this. Also, I’m a huge fan of Larry David, and now he’s even cool in the fashion world. Who would have thought so?
Fast forward a few weeks, maybe just a few days, after discovering the ugly sneaker trend, and I slowly but surely started to love it. Especially since my all-time favorite brand, Balenciaga, made the coolest (or shall I say the ugliest?) of them all, the Balenciaga Triple S. And let’s not forget that I have difficult feet, so when a comfy shoe trend comes along I’m all for it.
Hello there, Triple S, come to mama.
The Balenciaga Triple S
So why are they called Balenciaga Triple S? Because of the triple-stacked shoe sole. To create the heavily padded, triple-soled design, molds were taken from running, basketball and track shoes, which were then stacked to create the silhouette. Very creative and cool, Demna Gvasalia!
Yes, they are heavy because of this, but still very comfy. I’ve used mine several times for a few hours walk and my feet are happy. But they do run a bit large. I went down from my usual 39 to a 38 in these. 38 fits me perfectly. Perhaps I could have used one extra millimeter on the length, but 39 was so huge that they were not an option.
They come in many color combinations and also all black and all white. Although I’m a person who likes to play it safe when it comes to shoe colors, I wanted to go all in with the Triple S and got a feminine colorful version. I love to wear them with girly dresses or a ruffle skirt like here, and they look great with a pair of cropped jeans. I also plan to wear them with skinny leather pants and chunky knit when fall season is here.
The Balenciaga Triple S sneaker is so ugly that it’s cute, just like a pug. And before you pug lovers bite my head off, these are not MY words! It’s something I used to hear all the time when I had my pug Jimmi back in the days.
The sneakers we love to hate
They go by many names: the ugly sneaker, the dad sneaker, and even the grandpa sneaker. I can confirm that the last name is a reality amongst the non-fashion crowd, such as my 6-year-old son. When he saw my brand new Balenciaga Triple S in the hallway he thought his grandpa was visiting!
A big amusement to hubby of course, who seriously HATES these shoes. He thinks they are beyond ugly and even started to laugh when he saw them, he just couldn’t believe I would wear something like this. Even uglier than UGGs! But to be honest, the more he hates them the more I love them. Get used to it hubby, because they’re a natural part of my outfit now, whether it’s jeans or a dress.
This is a trend we love to hate or hate that we love. Personally, I thought I’d get more hate than love when I bought these, but I’m surprised by how many of my friends, social media friends, and even my mom, think they are cool and even cute.
Do I regret getting a pair of the Triple S? Heck to the no.
Let’s hope the ugly sneaker trend is here to stay for a while, my problem feet say thank you in advance.
