Happy birthday to me
On Saturday, October 6, it was my 39th birthday. Summer is over, but wearing dresses is not. One of my favorite fall looks is wearing a chunky knit over a maxi dress. It’s casual but still dressed up – perfect for a cozy birthday celebration with my family.
And of course, comfy is key. To quote Coco Chanel: “Fashion has two purposes: comfort and love. Beauty comes when fashion succeeds.”
On another note, pushing 40 used to stress me out a bit. I wasn’t quite ready. I’m still 29 in my head and suddenly I’m walking into the last year in my 30s! But then something happened. I used to dread getting older, but now I’m grateful for every year. Why I see things differently now is something I’ll fill you in on later.
Chunky knit over a maxi dress, how to make it work
Like I mentioned, one of my favorite fall looks is wearing a chunky knit over a maxi dress. But as easy it may sound to throw a sweater over a dress, there are certain things you should keep in mind to make it work.
One thing is the length of the sweater. If you’re wearing a long maxi dress, it shouldn’t be too long, or your upper body may look very long as well. I can only speak for my own body type of course, and on me, that’s not a flattering look. Keeping the length of the sweater a bit on the cropped side makes it look more well-proportioned, giving it a more balanced and pleasing effect. Also, more of the dress is visible, which is a bonus.
Another thing I like to do is revealing parts of the dress by the neckline or at the sleeves. Or both. It gives you a more consistent look and shows you’re actually wearing a dress and not a skirt underneath. So, roll up those sweater sleeves or wear something with a wide neckline.
Earthy color palette and mixed print
Every fall I’m naturally drawn to wearing more earthy tones. Shades of beige, camel and brown are a favorite. And red of course, my all-time favorite color, especially in Bordeaux and rusty tones.
No wonder I immediately fell in love with this Zara dress! It has it all: beautiful floral print in beige, brown and rusty red tones, pretty lace details and a flattering fit.
Lately, I’ve also become a bigger fan of mixing prints. This has been a bit scary earlier. But since leopard print once again has become a huge trend (yay!), I dared to mix this with other prints and it works well, especially when it’s in the same color palette. So I added a cozy loop scarf in leopard print since it was a bit chilly this day.
And let’s not forget the bag. My Celine classic Box has the perfect shade of “fall brown”. I use it all year, but there’s something about it that makes me love it even more during fall. Also, I love its versatility. Roomy enough to fit my essentials and the crossbody option is a huge bonus.
Since there’s a lot going on with the dress, scarf and accessories, I toned it down with a black headpiece and black booties. The cowboy boots trend is huge this season, and so are sailor/newsboy hats. Again, comfy is key!
